Wag! Walkers know The Gap
The Gap is a tiny community on the south side of Chicago and is home to the Illinois Institute of Optometry, the De La Salle Institute, and Robinson Row, a series of four homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Housing here is a mix of single-family homes and condos. Dog parks and pet supply stores are just a short drive away, as are restaurants serving up a range of different cuisines for you to sample. For those of you who are White Sox fans, Guaranteed Rate Field is just across on the other side of the Dan Ryan Expressway.
While days and nights can make things a little hectic, living here also puts you within easy driving distance of the lakeshore and Burnham Park. Living this close to the lake also means bearing the brunt of the lake effect winds and snows during the winter months sometimes bringing feet of snow and weeks of bone-freezing wind chills.
What is the terrain like in The Gap?
The bulk of the ground here in the Gap is a blend of suburban streets and vacant lots. Walking means hitting the sidewalks and trying to make the most of each block around your home. You can change directions, choose different blocks, and even go walking outside of the neighborhood.
Keep in mind that pavement can become extremely hot during the heat of summer. It can become hot enough to burn your pup's paws and cause some discomfort that put them out of commission for a while.
Of course, if you get tired of walking on paved surfaces, you do have the option of going over to Lake Meadows Park or Dunbar Park to run around! Alternatively, you can take your pooch for a nice long walk along the lakeshore in Burnham Park where the trails will take you for miles along the waterfront any time of year.
How many greenways are there in The Gap?
Within the neighborhood, the only real green spaces are vacant lots. Keep in mind that just because the property is vacant doesn't mean you and your can run around on it! These properties are all privately owned.
Dunbar Park offers sports fields, trails, trees, and acres of grass for you and your pup to play catch or fetch on when it is not being used. Lake Meadows Park offers similar facilities and covers a much larger area including a soft surface play area for the kids.
Go a couple more blocks to the east and you can't miss Burnham Park and the 31st St. Harbor. The park runs for several blocks up and down the shore and offers several trails for the two of you to stroll along including one that runs right along the waterfront, giving you a spectacular view of the boats coming in and out of the harbor.
