Wag! Walkers know Wrightwood

Wrightwood is on the Southwest side of Chicago and is bordered on the south by Evergreen Park, on the west by Burbank, and on the east by the South Shore. This primarily residential community is located within close proximity to the beautiful Dan Ryan Woods.

Along the bordering streets of West 87th Street and West 79th Street, there are cafes, restaurants, and small businesses. Most do not have outdoor seating, but there are some exceptions. South of Wrightwood, you can find some stores that sell pet supplies as well as training facilities. To the southeast, you can find the R. Lewis Dog Training Center where your dog can receive training.

Hayes Park is large for a regional park, and offers a long walking trail around the ball fields with pleasant tree cover. To the east, the Dan Ryan Woods spread out for several miles, and also offer pleasant grassy fields for you and your dog.

What is the terrain like in Wrightwood?

This flat residential neighborhood is made up of long, straight blocks. Homes are generally only one story and are set back from the sidewalk behind grassy lawns and beautifully manicured landscaping.

The divider between sidewalk and road is not wide, but the general low-traffic of this neighborhood and the large grassy yards will make you feel comfortable walking your dog on a loose leash or bicycling at his side through this beautiful and pleasant neighborhood.

There is not much diversity from these well-maintained neighborhood streets throughout most of Wrightwood, but you can find some variety at Hayes Park where a trail goes around the playing fields, leaving plenty of grass and trees on the outside of the fields for you to enjoy with your dog. The Dan Ryan Woods also offers challenging hiking exploration through thick forest, or you can stick to one of the walking trails for an easier walk. Either way, you have plenty of options.

How many greenways are there in Wrightwood?

Wrightwood’s regional park, Hayes Park, is a large park with lots of grassy areas aside from the playing field. But if you are looking for a real natural exploration, head towards the Dan Ryan Woods. This extensive forest offers natural tree cover with rough dirt trails throughout.

There are also large, grassy areas surrounded by forest where you can enjoy the sunshine and get away from the wind on cold and windy Chicago days. This wilderness area is extensive enough to support some wildlife and the forest is old and mature, so you will get to see beautiful sights along your walk. Your dog will be stimulated mentally by the sounds and smells of wildlife and physically by the diverse terrain.

If you want the opportunity to experience nature with your dog, but would rather see water than forest, head north to the Marquette Lagoon which is a body of water that sprawls through a nearby park.
