Wag! Walkers know Old Town South
Old Town South is a neighborhood in Western Springs, Illinois which itself is a suburban village just a few miles west of Chicago’s downtown area. The neighborhood is pleasant and traditionally suburban in many ways with picturesque lawns, tree-lined streets, and large homes. Its residents are able to enjoy the town’s close proximity to Chicago while still living in a secluded, quiet community.
The weather in Western Springs is similar to that of much of the Chicago area, but it doesn’t experience the same level of wind coming off of Lake Michigan as the parts of the city closer to the lake do. It can still be very cold during the winter, so make sure to keep yourself and your dog warm while taking walks in the colder months. In the summer and springtime, Western Springs can be an ideal place to walk your dog with mild temperatures and good weather.
What is the terrain like in Old Town South?
The terrain in Old Town South is extremely flat with no real hills or shifts in elevation to speak of. This reflects much of Chicago and its surrounding areas where you won’t see large elevation shifts for miles. This, combined with the fact that there are sidewalks on every street with an abundance of trees and grassy areas, makes Old Town South a mild, easy place for dog walking.
You will not have to deal with much foot or street traffic in any area in Old Town South, but there are a few major thoroughfares that will get busy around regular rush hour times. Roads like 47th Street and Burlington Avenue run on either side of the neighborhood and are high-traffic areas for commuters going to and from the city. If you walk within the borders of the neighborhood though, you should be able to avoid most traffic.
How many greenways are there in Old Town South?
The only park within the boundaries of Old Town South is Spring Rock Park but it is a huge, 42-acre park that is easily walkable from anywhere in the neighborhood. The park has several walking paths, multiple athletic fields, a playground, a picnic area, and lots of open field space where your dog can roam freely. It also has natural wildlife in the outer sections of the park with creeks and forests for exploring.
Adjacent to Spring Rock Park is Hinsdale Veeck Park which lies just outside of the boundaries of Old Town South. This park is much smaller than Spring Rock but it has many of the same amenities, as well as a skate park, which makes it a popular attraction for teenagers in the area. Between these two parks, you will find plenty of grass for you and your dog to walk through and there are even more parks and greenways around the Western Springs area.
