There are also some local businesses located along Washington Avenue. The Carrollton Veterinary Clinic and Low-Cost Animal Medical Center are also located within walking distance for pet owners in the area.
New Orleans dog walkers do not need to worry about freezing temperatures or snow in the region as winters are mild and heavy outerwear is not a requirement. Heat and humidity, however, can be a factor when walking your dog during summer months. Many local dog owners take their furry friends out first thing in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures cool off a bit.
Gert Town is bordered by Earhart Boulevard on the southwest, the Pontrachain Freeway on the northeast, Cambronne Street on the northwest, and South Broad Avenue on the southeast border. A canal runs parallel to Washington Avenue.
Gert Town was severely affected by flooding when levees breached during Hurricane Katrina. While much redevelopment and rebuilding have taken place, there are still vacant lots where homes and businesses have not re-established in the community. These vacant lots may be unkempt, so keep your dog off of private properties that are vacant and may contain unseen hazards.
The main feature of the neighborhood is the Xavier University campus property and buildings which occupy a significant portion of the northwest side of the region. When walking with your dog, you will find sidewalks and flat ground, making it easy to get around without steep hills or the need to share streets with traffic.

There is also an enclosed dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs.
