Indiana Dunes

Whether you and your pup live in Indiana, or you're visitors passing through, the Indiana Dunes are definitely a place you'll want to check out. The Indiana Dunes are one of the most popular destination locations in the state, bringing millions of guests to the area each year. Situated on the south side of Lake Michigan, the dunes offer visitors not only access to 15 miles of beaches and a pristine shoreline, but also trails, fine cuisine and a variety of activities to fill your day.

One of the biggest pet perks of the Indiana Dunes is it's home to multiple dog friendly beaches for you to bring Fido. Three beaches in particular are Kemil Beach, Dunbar Beach and Lake View Beach. All three beaches are part of the National Lakeshore Beaches that are situated on the east side of the Indiana Dunes State Park. Both Kemil and Dunbar beaches have seasonal washrooms and potable water that is offered between April and November, whereas Lake View Beach offers these amenities year round.

Each of the three beaches have the same hours of operation and rules for pups. All  require dogs to remain on a leash at all times, no longer than six feet in length. This rule still applies when in the water. Be mindful of other guests while you enjoy the beauty of the lake. Bring any beach essentials, such as bottles or bowls for drinking water, and clean-up bags.

Places where pooches are not allowed are the beaches found on the west side of the state park, including Porter Beach, Portage Lakefront Beach and West Beach. Regardless of this limitation, you’re pup can join you as you hike through trails that extend over 70 miles in length! One trail you are asked to avoid is the Glenwood Dunes Trail System, as this is used for horses, and the Pinhook Bog Trail. The Nature Play areas are also off limits to pups.
