Orchard Beach is a unique find as it is the only beach in Bronx, New York, making it quite the popular location. This crescent-shaped beach was once known as "The Riviera of New York" when it was first created in the 1930's. Not only does it contain a 1.1-mile long beach within 115 acres of land, but it is also riddled with amenities including two separate picnic areas, two playgrounds, a snack bar, both food and souvenir carts, and 26 sports courts for games including volleyball, basketball, and handball.
Showering facilities and washrooms are also available on site and are open to the public. Although there is no fee to get into the beach, parking does cost $8.00 Monday through Friday and $10.00 on weekends.
Unfortunately for dog walkers, Orchard beach does not welcome pets on either the beach or promenade between May 20th and October 1st. From October 2nd - May 19th dogs are welcome, but they must remain on-leash and off the beach at all times. Even with these limitations, the beautiful, hexagonal-shaped promenade running along the beach is a perfect place to walk your dog, while simultaneously providing you with phenomenal views of the beach and beyond.
Another option, if you're looking to really escape the concrete jungle in search for solitude while walking your pup with less limitations of timing, is the Kazimiroff Nature trail. This trail can be accessed from the North end of Orchard Beach Parking lot and it contains both long and short loop paths, giving you and your pooch the option of deciding how long your journey will be.
Whether you and your pooch are looking to escape the complexities of the congested city for a refreshing natural experience, or you’re just looking to visit a popular hangout in Bronx, Orchard Beach is the answer!
