Searching for a spot near Sandpoint, Idaho where you and your pup can take a dip in the water? Sandpoint's Dog Beach, nestled between U.S. Highway 95 (the Idaho Transportation Department right-of-way) and the railroad, is the perfect spot for a fun day in the sun. The area's scenery is charming as Sandpoint is surrounded by multiple mountain ranges, historic brick buildings, and quaint cabins. This makes it a superb spot to sit and relax if you aren't in the mood to get in the water with your pooch.Â
Outlining Lake Pend Oreille, Dog Beach Park offers over 1000 feet of sandy lakefront shoreline for your pup to splash and run free off-leash. An abundance of trees offers natural shade to cool off after exhilarating play. You can also find natural toys for your doggo as the driftwood found onshore makes for a great fetch object.Â
The two biggest downsides of the Beach are its lack of fencing and distance from amenities. As it is an off-leash area, it is pertinent, not only for the safety of other dogs but for the safety of yourself, that your canine companion listens and obeys voice commands. There is no fence to keep them in; therefore, if they do not adhere to your directions, there is a chance that your dog could run off and onto Hwy 95. Also, the closest bathrooms and parking are about 3/4 of a mile up the trail from the beach.Â
Near the bathrooms are doggy bags that are offered to patrons to ensure you clean up after your pup. This beach can be busy; however, because people have taken the initiative to ensure they dispose of their dog's waste, it is a very clean area. With that, on your way down the path that leads to the beach, please grab some dog poo bags or bring some from home.Â
Keep in mind that the train can be noisy; therefore, plan accordingly if your pooch isn't a fan of loud sounds. There also isn't a drinking station, so please remember to bring your four-legged friend water to help them cool down after chasing that driftwood and swimming in the water!Â
