Boasting a quiet and secluded campground where dogs are welcome, Bowman Lake State Park is a paw-some retreat for dog lovers. Located west of Oxford, New York, this lakefront park offers pet-friendly cabins and also accommodates tent and RV campers.
For many visitors to Bowman Lake State Park, the main attraction is the lake itself, which is within walking distance of the campground. There's a sandy beach for swimming and sunbathing, and picnic areas surround the lake if you want to enjoy lunch with a water view. Bowman Lake is also stocked with trout on a regular basis, but be aware that motorized boating is not allowed.
When you're not enjoying the water, there's plenty more to see and do within this 960-acre park. There are 13 miles of designated hiking trails that lead you through the surrounding evergreen and hardwood forests -- the self-guided nature trail that leads around the lake is a particular favorite -- and the trails are also open to snowmobilers and cross-country skiers in the winter months.
Other highlights include a nature center and the chance to enjoy some birdwatching, with more than 100 species of birds to keep an eye out for.
The Bowman Lake State Park campground is home to 150 campsites and eight cabins. Sites are spacious and reasonably private, and all amenities are easily accessible. A vehicle entrance fee of $5 applies and campsites set you back $15 to $19 a night. Cabins start at $45.50 per night.
If visiting with your pet, please be aware that a two-pet maximum applies per site. Dogs are not allowed in bathing areas and must be kept on a leash at all times. As always, you'll need to clean up after your canine and dispose of their waste. This is also a quiet and tranquil campground, so try to keep noise to a minimum.
Otherwise, simply relax and enjoy your stay. And if you're looking for more adventure, there are several other great state parks -- including Gilbert Lake, Oquaga Creek and Chenango Valley -- nearby.
