Located in the middle of the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains, Convict Lake Campground is a kid- and dog-friendly campground. The lake and national forest around it provide plenty of options for family fun, relaxation, and outdoor recreation. Sitting at an elevation of 7,500 feet, the campground offers breathtaking views of the Convict Lake and the majestic mountain scenery.
The Convict Creek cuts across the campground while the 167-acre Convict Lake is around a hundred yards away. The landscape is sprinkled with low vegetation and shrubs while tall aspen and cottonwood trees can also be found along the creek. You need to be wary of the wildlife that includes mountain lions, black bears, pika, mule deer, and several species of birds and fish. The east side of Sierra Nevada Mountains is popular for excellent trout fishing. You can cast a line for rainbow or brown trout and share your catch with Fido as well. Remember to carry poop bags and clean up after your doggo, whom you also need to keep on a leash during your visit.
Plenty of amenities can be found in the campground and nearby resort, contributing to an enjoyable camping experience. The magnificent scenery and diverse trails continue to attract hikers, equestrian enthusiasts, and mountain bikers. You can access the 3.5-mile Lake Trail from the campground while numerous other trails are in the John Muir Wilderness close by.
While some sites overlook the lake, others are not far away from the shore. Drinking water, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station are provided. You also get food storage lockers because of the bears. You can buy firewood onsite. There is also a restaurant and pack station down the road at the Convict Lake Resort. From snow-capped mountains to deep canyons and hiking to rock climbing, there is plenty to see and do in and around this campground. The best time to visit this amazing campground is in September when the aspens are showing fall colors.
