If the idea of lakefront camping in the Adirondacks sounds paw-some to you (and your dog), Verona Beach State Park will be high on your wishlist of must-visit camping destinations.
Situated on the shores of Oneida Lake, this pet-friendly campground features a total of 47 sites -- 11 waterfront sites, 12 electric sites, and 24 basic sites. There's a limit of six people and two pets per site, but all camping areas are large and well-spaced.
However, this is a popular park and there isn't a whole lot of privacy from your neighbors. So if you're looking for somewhere quiet and secluded where you can get away from it all, this probably ain't the park for you.
The good news is that dogs are more than welcome in the campground, provided that they're kept on a leash of six feet or shorter and that you remember to clean up after your pet whenever necessary. Dogs also aren't allowed in bathing areas and must have proof of current vaccinations.
Camping prices range from $18 to $30 a night depending on the site you select, while there's an extra fee of $5 a night for campers from out of state.
Once you've set up camp, chances are you'll want to head down to the sandy swimming beach to cool off. The water is cool and relatively shallow, making it a reasonably safe spot for kids to make a splash. Canoeing, boating, and fishing are all popular pastimes on the lake, with anglers able to target walleye pike, yellow perch, bass, and more.
There's also the Woods and Wetlands Nature Trail for those looking to explore the diverse habitats present in the local area, and several other easy trails between one and two miles in length. Wildlife you might encounter along the way includes beaver, white-tailed deer, red foxes, and a wide variety of waterfowl. Other park features include food concessions, a kids' recreation program, dumping stations, and picnic tables.
Verona Beach State Park offers lakefront camping at its finest, so why not treat your dog (and the rest of the family) to a relaxing getaway beside the water?
