Watauga campground is filled with trees, forest, and plenty of shady areas to get away from the hot sun. However, if you want to sunbathe or hang out near the stunning Watauga Lake, you can do just that. There is a large and open grassy area for sunbathing, playing games, and running your dog around as well. There is also an excellent gravel trail that loops throughout the campground, so you can take hikes with your pup and family to enjoy the scenery!Â
You will also have access to bathrooms with flushing toilets, picnic tables, grills, accessible fresh drinking water, paved paths for walking and running, a pavilion that can be reserved for the day, scenic overlooks for enjoying views and taking pictures, and lake access for swimming. You are also allowed to bring kayaks, canoes, and small boats into the lake as well.Â
Access to electricity is available at this campground as well, making it convenient for charging phones, computers, and other electronic devices. Nearby, there is also a boat launch, a shooting range, and the Big Laural Branch Wilderness Area.
The peak season for this campground is between May 25th and October 12th every year. There does not seem to be poop bags available at this location, so you will have to bring your own. There are trash cans around the recreation area so you can quickly discard these bags. Always remember to keep your dog under control and make sure they are never aggressive to other dogs and people. The leash requirement is unknown, but it is always a better idea to keep your dog leashed.Â
