In Northern California, Auburn State Recreation Area offers more than 42,000 acres of recreational area and a wide variety of things to see and do. Some of the park’s main features include excellent gold panning and a number of annual endurance races that take place in the park every year. 

Auburn State Recreation Area features the most endurance events of any other place in the world; it’s known as the “Endurance Capital of the World.” Gold panning remains one of the park’s most popular activities. But be aware that no tools or equipment can be used except for the gold pan itself. 

There are additional regulations on the usage and collection of certain materials. Check the park’s website for a detailed description. If walking your dog is your goal, the park’s trails are open for both hiking and horseback riding. Trail maps are available online and from the park office. 

Auburn State Recreation Area extends for 20 miles along two forks of the American River. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and whitewater recreation, which is popular on both forks. The river has class II, III, IV, and V runs for a variety of challenge levels. 

For overnight guests, Auburn State Recreation Area offers family campsites as well as primitive and boat-in camping. Auburn State Recreation Area is open for day use between 7:00 AM and sunset every day. There is a $10 parking fee per vehicle. Other camping or facility uses have other associated fees. Leashed pets are welcome at Auburn State Recreation Area. 

Overnight, they must be enclosed in a tent or vehicle. Be courteous and pick up pet waste. Use caution out on the trails, as mountain lions, black bears, and rattlesnakes do live in the area. Over 900,000 people visit Auburn State Recreation Area every year.
