Description

Experience the great outdoors of southwest Montana with your furry BFF at the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest! Spanning 3.3 million acres along the Continental Divide, it is the largest national forest in the state and has something for everyone, including four-legged adventurers! Whether it's hiking in the wilderness, driving on backcountry roads, or sleeping under the stars, your pooch will appreciate exploring and spending time at Beaverhead-Deerlodge with you!

The forest comprises several ranger districts, one of which is the Wise River Ranger District. Nestled in the heart of Beaverhead-Deerlodge, it contains various recreation areas and campgrounds. If you and Fido would like to go hiking, be sure to check out the Boulder Creek Campground and Picnic Area in the Pioneer Mountains. This heavily wooded site features abundant wildlife and many trails for day hiking. Tent and trailer camping are available for overnighters as well.

Lehmi Pass, a National Historic Landmark, is also located in the forest. Part of the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this well-preserved site remains very similar to what it was like 200 years ago. Explore the area by following the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail or Laura Tolman Scott Wildflower Trail. Ruffly 1 mile long, the Wildflower Trail has a native soil surface and includes some moderate grades. It's recommended to visit in June and July when the wildflowers are at their most vibrant. After your hike, share a packed lunch with Fido at the Sacajawea Memorial Area.

For a more remote excursion, the forest offers two wildernesses: Anaconda Pintler and Lee Metcalf. The former is rugged, high-elevation country, while the latter is wild canyon country. Both have puptacular scenery and are home to various wildlife species. No matter which areas of the forest you and Fido find yourselves in, always keep your doggo on a leash and clean up after them.

Pawsome outdoor adventures await at the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest!
