Big Spring State Park

Dramatic views from the 200-foot bluff are just part of what visitors to Big Spring State Park may expect. Visitors to Big Spring State Park may engage in walking, jogging, cycling, picnicking, or simply taking in the sights. The park offers a group pavilion that may be reserved in advance for large parties of up to 50 people. The park also hosts a massive fireworks display on Independence Day that is one of the largest in the region. During the summer months, the Big Spring Film Society screens movies at the top of the ridge.

The park is open daily from 8:00 AM until sunset and is free to enter. Reservations may be made in advance by calling the park office. The number is listed on the park’s website. There are a number of other nearby parks that visitors can check out while they’re in the area, including Lake Colorado City State Park, Comanche Trail Park, Historical Spring, and several others.

Like any other state park in Texas, pets are not allowed inside any buildings. For the safety of your pets and the protection of local wildlife, dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet in length at all times. If you’re hiking with your dog, always come prepared with enough water for yourself and your pet. Be wary of rattlesnakes or other hazards on trails. Not all trails are suitable for dogs’ paws.

Always come prepared with your own waste bags, and always clean up after yourself and your pet. Be respectful of posted rules and other park visitors; never bring aggressive dogs or unvaccinated puppies, or allow your dog to be a nuisance to other visitors. If you’re looking for a nice place to stretch your legs or walk your dog in central Texas, Big Spring State Park is a great, free spot to spend some time and take in the views.
