Big Walnut Dog Park is a public dog park located in Columbus, Ohio. It was one of the first off-leash dog parks in the city and since its opening, it has become a very popular destination in the community for a variety of reasons. The three-acre dog park consists of three fenced-in areas which are secured with a double-gated entry system to prevent dogs from slipping out. One area is meant to accommodate small dog breeds, another enclosure is for the larger hounds and the third off-leash area accommodates both breed types.
There is also a pond that dogs can access, enjoy, and splash around in. In addition to the above, the park is well lit which is very convenient since it is open until late in the evening. The trash cans are always empty while the dog waste bag dispensers are always full and patrons do their best at tidying up after their dogs and keeping this park clean.
The off-leash area is covered in grass and is well-shaded by the tall, mature trees that grow throughout the park. However, playtime does get muddy after rainfall so make sure to bring a towel to clean your pooch’s paws. Bringing your own water and bowl for your dog is also a good idea unless you don’t mind him drinking from the pond and the water jugs by it. Seating is usually not a problem as there are several picnic benches that owners can relax on while they watch their dogs. Though not ideal, there is a portable restroom available by the dog park.
In addition to the dog park amenities, the Big Walnut Park features sports fields, a basketball court, a tennis court, childrens playgrounds, and a recreation center. If your four-legged buddy is extra active you can take him on an on-leash walk through the lit walking trails that run throughout the park as well as the woods and wildlife area.
