Located on the north side of Chico, California, DeGarmo Park is a 36-acre community park with plenty of activity options. The dog area inside the park is open from 7:00 AM until dusk year-round.
In addition to the fenced, off-leash dog park area, DeGarmo Park also features a large playground area for kids of all ages, wide open turf fields, softball fields, covered patio picnic areas, which are available to reserve in advance, and a walking path.
The Chico Park and Recreation District is working towards expanding DeGarmo Park with additional activities and options, including indoor facilities and an aquatic center. The dog area inside DeGarmo Park is mostly dirt and sand and is large enough for many dogs to run with room to spare.
The only fenced area is for large and small dogs and includes a water station. A water tub is usually provided during the summer months for pups to splash in and keep cool in the hot sunlight. It might also be a good idea to bring a chair and sunscreen; the dog park area has limited shade and seating.
The other areas of the park include ample seating and shade, but dogs must be on a leash in other areas of the park. Dog potty bags are usually provided in the dog area, but it’s always a good idea to come prepared to pick up after your own pet. Before bringing your dog to DeGarmo Park, make sure you’re prepared to be responsible for your own dog.
You should make sure your dog is up-to-date with all vaccinations, isn’t aggressive, is spayed or neutered, and will obey voice commands. Being responsible also means you shouldn’t bring in any food or toys, children under 7 years old, puppies under four months, or female dogs in heat. Pet owners are legally responsible for anything their pets do.
You can visit DeGarmo Park and have plenty of fun with a variety of activities, just be mindful and respectful of others.
