Description

Fort Griffin State Historic Site is located high above the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. It is an excellent location for relaxing, walking, stargazing, and getting to know more about the history of these western defensive forts, commanding over the Southern Plains from 1867 to 1881.

From hiking, fishing, camping, and walking on the 1.4-mile loop trail, the property is also an excellent place to exercise your furry best friend. The path is accessible to all, as there are no certain skill levels required, and you can use it to walk or run alongside your furry buddy all year-long. The only condition is that you keep your dog on a leash at all times.

Operated by the Texas Historical Commission, the ruins of Fort Griffin State Historic Site offer visitors a chance to see the mess hall, barracks, the bakery, powder magazine, first sergeant’s quarters, as well as the hand-dug well located on the premises.

Apart from this, owners can also relax under large shade trees, catch catfish in the river, rent a rowboat, or eat and shop at various locations in the town of Albany. The trail and its surroundings are perfect for enjoying a quiet and relaxing stroll alongside your furry best friend, in a natural environment.

The ground is mostly grass, and there is plenty of vegetation around for Fido to run and play. There is also a playground nearby and areas for the kids to enjoy, as well as a beautiful campground located on the banks of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River.

From nature trails to historical ranches and townsites, Fort Griffin State Historic Site is a great place to let Fido explore nature while enjoying the fort's ruins and nearby camping area. Plus, it is not a crowded location, so there are extra points for relaxing and unwinding in a gorgeous outdoor setting such as this one.
