Heilmann Dog Park is a public play area located within Heilmann Regional Park in Atascadero, California. It opened in April of 2005 as the first off-leash dog park in northern San Luis Obispo County, and since that time it has been receiving high ratings on Internet review sites.
It features 2/3 of an acre of land within the park and is fully fenced in. Access to the park is through two double gates, one of which is on the west side of the park and one of which is on the north.
The park is easily accessible from Highway 101. Visitors can take Santa Rosa Road to El Camino Real, from which a left turn onto El Bordo leads to the park on the right. There is plenty of parking just past the park to the north.
Inside the park, visitors will find oak trees and a specially constructed structure for shade. Covered picnic tables are available for owners, and dogs can enjoy the provided water. There is also a patio and a dog spa to pamper your pooch. Those seeking to learn more can visit the information kiosk, a community project built by a local Eagle Scout.
The park recently added a new area specifically for small dogs of 25 pounds or less. It is also available as a safe space for dogs who need a space apart from the main park. These include dogs with fear aggression challenges as well as aging dogs and puppies who are just beginning to socialize.
Dog owners in both areas must assume all responsibility for their dogs and ensure that aggressive dogs do not visit the park. The park also prohibits female dogs in heat as well as male dogs over 6 months of age who are not neutered. All dogs must be vaccinated and owners must pick up after their dogs. Children are welcome but must be supervised.
A welcome addition to the landscape for dog owners in San Luis Obispo County, the dog park has received high ratings on Internet review sites. Visitors appreciate not only its accessible size and features but also the friendliness of its visitors.
