Picture an area the size of San Francisco, then double it. You are imagining close to 53,000 acres of land, which is about the size of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Within approximately a third of this massive region are some of the world’s most ancient redwood trees, some of which are over 300-feet-tall and older than 2000-years-old.Â
Most of this breathtaking landscape can be taken in via the famous Avenue of Giants, a scenic drive showcasing the area’s awe-inspiring redwoods and wildlife. The Avenue of Giants is a 32-mile road and a well-maintained scenic route offering drivers the chance to explore a vast amount of natural beauty in a short amount of time.Â
There are many sightseeing destinations along the way, including most notably the Dyerville Giant, a fallen redwood that at one time grew to a staggering height of 362 feet. That is the combined height of more than 60 six-feet-tall individuals. Your dog is welcome to journey with you in the car, of course, and is only prohibited from venturing out onto the trails with you.Â
As far as state parks go, the Humboldt Redwoods State Park is one of the more dog-friendly places that you can take your dog. The California Department of Parks and Recreation manages the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, and they are responsible for protecting what remains of the ancient redwoods.Â
Campsites exist all throughout the state park, and dogs are welcome to stay in the campgrounds with you provided that they are on a leash at all times. Dogs are also able to hike fire and access roads, many of which offer the same towering redwoods as popular hikes throughout the park. Just make sure to pack their poop out of wherever you go to preserve the environment!Â
The Humboldt Redwoods State Park is astoundingly beautiful all times of the year, although you may want to plan ahead to account for more popular summer conditions and limited camping availabilities. This is truly an ancient and mysterious place, among the most beautiful of all state parks in California, and one that you will want to see in your lifetime.Â
