Description

An hour and a half northwest of Austin, Texas, is Longhorn Caverns State Park, one of the region’s most unique geological features—open to the public to explore with a tour guide. Entry to the park grounds is free. The caverns may be explored on a guided tour. Contact the park office for reservation information and pricing. The grounds and facilities are day-use only and are open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. They are only closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Outside the caverns, the grounds offer places to picnic, hike, or learn about the Civilian Conservation Corps and the other work they have done in Texas. There is also a gift shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs or snacks. There are other attractions nearby, including Inks Lake State Park, which offers a place to camp as well as other outdoor recreation activities.

Inside the caverns, a guided tour takes guests through the spectacular geologic features of the Longhorn Caverns. The tour covers one-and-a-quarter miles, and may not be suitable for all guests. Contact the park office for further information regarding the cavern tour.

If you’re walking or hiking with your dog, always bring enough water for yourself and your pet and be aware of hazards. It’s also a good idea to come prepared with your own waste bags, as they aren’t always available. Always be sure to clean up after yourself and your pet. Be respectful of posted rules and signs and of other park visitors; never bring aggressive dogs or unvaccinated puppies, or allow your dog to be a nuisance to others.

At Longhorn Caverns, dogs are only permitted in outside areas, as long as they’re kept on a leash no longer than six feet in length at all times. Just like any other Texas state parks, Longhorn Canyons State Park does not allow any pets inside buildings. Pets must be supervised at all times and never left alone. If you’re looking for a great day-use area with spectacular sights, you should check out Longhorn Caverns State Park. Just be sure you have someone available to watch your pet while you take the tour.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
