Only a few miles south of Pismo Beach, California, the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area offers visitors an expansive coastal dunes area for outdoor recreational fun. As one of the largest coastal dune areas left in California, Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only California state park where guests can drive vehicles right on the beach.
But Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is not only sand dunes. There is plenty more to do. The area hosts camping and horseback riding. If you have a horse or a recreational vehicle, you can enjoy the beach and dunes. Or, even if you don’t, take a walk along the sand with your dog. For those who like fun on the water, there is also swimming, boating, surfing, and more.Â
There is a Cave Excursion as well, which offers three-hour guided kayak tours of arches, caves, and rock gardens only accessible from the water. The tours are enjoyable for both novices and more experienced kayakers. The Cave Excursion provides the guide, instruction, paddling equipment, water, a light snack, and even pictures from your tour.Â
Or if you prefer, kayaks may be rented, and the caves explored at your own pace without a guide. For those interested in camping, the beach is open for those with four-wheel-drive vehicles. Alternatively, there are campsites, which are available to reserve in advance through the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area’s office by phone.
Due to the high popularity of day-use at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, visitors with off-highway vehicles (OHVs) may be turned away during peak park usage, such as during the summer or on holidays. If you are concerned about ensuring your place, make reservations to camp.
If you bring your pets to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, be respectful of the posted rules.
