Description

The Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve is an off-the-beaten-path area with little in the way of developed facilities, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. On the contrary, the sprawling expanse of old growth forest is beautiful, isolated, and worth exploring. From a narrow pull-off area on the side of Highway 101, visitors can park along the highway and take a walk.

This nature reserve in California includes Frank and Bess Smithe Grove of redwood trees, which used to be a private resort area. The park also features a 60-foot waterfall if you’re willing to walk a bit. While there are no designated trails in the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve, there are plenty of well-worn paths you can traverse to see the mighty redwoods and access the Eel River.

Bring a meal, and you can enjoy a picnic at the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve. There are picnic areas you can sit amid the trees and enjoy your food. If you enjoy water-based fun, the Eel River is a great place for fishing and swimming. There is even a designated swimming hole with a beach area. Boating is also allowed if you can haul your canoe, kayak, or float.

The Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve is open every day. For specific seasonal hours, contact the park office by phone. This nature reserve has no facilities of any kind, including bathrooms, so plan your visit accordingly. Leashed pets are permitted only in designated areas, which include beaches, picnic areas, and roads.

Be respectful of the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve rules and always remove pet waste. There are some nearby dog-friendly roads you can also explore with your canine companion in the old growth forests. Use caution in wild areas such as this, since bears, mountain lions, and other predators do roam the area.

Always come prepared and let someone know where you are and when you’ll return. In the stunning coastal old-growth redwoods of Northern California, the Smithe Redwoods State Natural Reserve offers an uncomplicated chance to enjoy nature. Bring your furry friend and family and enjoy your day in the wild.
