Van Meter State Park

The Van Meter State Park is over one thousand acres of beautiful woodlands studded with archaeological sites in Missouri. This furbulous park is a great place to explore the history of the Native Indians who once populated the area at the Missouria Indian Village and Old Fort earthwork, and discover more about the flora and fauna of the region. Pupular activities at the park include fishing in the lake, camping, hiking and wildlife spotting in the Oumessourit Nature Area on site. Missouri loves dogs, and your adventure pup is welcome to join you at the Van Meter State Park. 

One of the most enjoyable things to do in this state park with your best canine buddy is to hike the trails. There are seven different ones to choose that range from moderate to rugged. The shortest trail is the Earthworks Trail which passes through wooded countryside and ancient burial grounds. The Loess Hill Trail is around two miles long and skirts around the edge of the park's 18-acre fishing lake, pawfect for pet exercise. Per park rules, dogs should be on a leash no longer than ten feet in length throughout the entire park. Note that dogs are not allowed in the park buildings, or in bathing or swimming areas, and should not disturb the wildlife that call Van Meter their home. After a hike, be sure to check out the picnic areas and have a snack or meal in the pawsome outdoors.

If you want to make it a vacation, dogs are welcome at the park's campgrounds. The park also has a couple of dog-friendly cabins too! There is an extra daily dog charge on top of the normal rental fee. Whether for a weekend or afternoon, be sure to bring clean-up bags and scoop up whatever your pup leaves behind. Human restrooms are available near the campgrounds. Be sure to have enough water to share with your thirsty pup too!
