Nestled in the forested hills of Monterey, the Veterans Memorial Park is a furrific spot for spending a few days on the peninsula with your canine best friend. Just a mile from downtown, the 50-acre park draws campers, hikers, and nature lovers looking for a fun outdoor adventure in Monterey.
A pawpular and affordable accommodation option, Veterans Memorial features a picturesque, wooded campground with 40 campsites, most of which are suitable for trailers. Each site is outfitted with a picnic table and firepit, so you and Fido can cook up and dig into your favorite camping meals amidst the beautiful scenery. Hookups are not available, but there are hot showers and clean restrooms to keep campers fresh. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and visitors say the campground fills up fast, so come early to snag a good spot!
The park also includes hiking trails that wind through Monterey pine forest and offer puptacular views of the bay. For a longer hike, you and Fido can venture into the adjacent, 81-acre Huckleberry Hill Nature Preserve. Simply follow the Veterans Park Trail abutting the western edge of the campground to the Presidio View Trail to reach the preserve. Be sure to take your time walking along the Presidio View Trail and enjoy the panoramic views of the city down below.
Other amenities at Veterans Memorial include a lawn playfield, picnic areas, a basketball court, and play equipment. Wherever you go, always keep your doggo on a leash and bring clean-up bags. Remember to bring plenty of water with you if you and Fido plan to go hiking—getting dehydrated is no fun! Also, make sure your pooch is accompanied at all times, as leaving them unattended at your campsite is a no-no.
