Wailoa River State Recreation Area

Just minutes from downtown Hilo, the Wailoa River State Recreation Area is pawfect for spending a lazy afternoon with your pup. Spanning 132 acres on both sides of Waiakea Pond, this expansive site is used by locals for picnics, informal events, sightseeing, and fishing.

Walking paths and spacious lawns make the Wailoa River SRA a great place to stretch your legs alongside your furry best friend. As you and your pooch stroll around the area, you'll come across a statue of King Kamehameha I, a Vietnam War Memorial, a Tsunami Memorial, and arching footbridges that let you cross the water and explore both halves of the park. Don't be surprised if you spot a couple of feral pigs, too, as they are known to live in the area. Also calling the park home is the Wailoa Center, which hosts month-long art and cultural exhibits. While the exhibits are free and open to the public, it doesn't seem that canine visitors are allowed inside, so come back another day when Fido isn't tagging along if you'd like to check out the galleries.

On the eastern side of the SRA, you'll find picnic pavilions where you and your pup can take a break from walking around and just hang out. Bring snacks and your dog's favorite treats so that you can enjoy a picnic while you watch people fishing and feeding the ducks in the pond. Drinking fountains are available in case you forgot to bring your own water. Two things that shouldn't be left at home, however, are Fido's leash and doggie waste bags. Always keep your furry buddy on a 6-foot leash and clean up after them wherever you go in the park.
