Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area encompasses a total area of almost 204,000 acres of land that is located in Shasta County and Trinity County, in the state of California and near the city of Redding, California. The Whiskeytown Unit can be accessed using Interstate-5 which is near Redding and just off CA 299.
The National Recreation Area was authorized on November 8, 1965, and officially established on October 21, 1972. The entire National Recreation Area is managed by both the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service. However, the Whiskeytown Unit is solely governed by the National Park Service while the Shasta and Trinity units are operated by the Forest Service.
The Whiskeytown Unit of the National Recreation Area has a lot to offer its visitors. First of all, the area generally has mountainous backcountry terrain, and this terrain includes a vast reservoir that is the source of a lot of outdoor recreational activities. This unit of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area also has buildings that are of historical significance, and this includes structures built during the Gold Rush.
Furthermore, the unit also has a 36-mile shoreline that is a favorite for many of the park's visitors. Besides these attractions, the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area is also a favorite place for several other recreational activities like water-skiing, camping, horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, swimming, snorkeling, boating, canoeing, scuba diving, hunting, recreational gold panning, fishing, and interpretive programs.
Amenities that are located in within the recreational area include restrooms, groceries, picnic area, campgrounds, boat rental, restaurant/snacks, boat ramp, bathhouse, self-guided tour/trail, and a visitor center. Visitors to the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area who have dogs are welcome to bring them into the recreational area although strict park rules apply. The number one rule to be aware of is that dog owners are expected to maintain immediate control of their pet at all times and ensure that their dog is always well-behaved.
