Description

Located right in the heart of Farmington, New Mexico, is the Animas River Trail. This trail is 5.3 miles stretching from Animas Park to Berg Park. The convenient location of this trail makes it the ideal place to get a break from the city. Locals love to use this trail for a walk with Fido, for their morning jog, or to enjoy a family outing on a summer evening. It's open year round, and is officially designated as a National Recreational Trail.

Animas Park and Berg Park are popular access points to the trail, being at the beginning and end. Here you can find parking, restrooms and various family-oriented activities. Berg Park in particular features excellent play and exercise equipment, along with a water feature that the kiddos can enjoy during the summer months. These parks offer a tranquil space to kick back in the cool grass and enjoy the scenery while your pup rests their paws.

As the name implies, the trail travels along the Animas River. It includes paved, dirt, wood chip and cobblestone paths, and crosses the river over one of the bridges. The trail doesn't have have much change in elevation, and is great for people and pups of any fitness level. Because of the nearby water and lush foliage, this is a great place to enjoy some bird watching. In fact, more than 100 species of birds have been identified throughout the area. Head to the Riverside Nature Center for a bag of free bird food, which you can use to feed the ducks and geese on the river. The Nature Center also offers guided walks for stargazing and birdwatching, along with educational toys for children.

Doggos are more than welcome along the trails, and you may even encounter other furry friends on your travels. Please be sure to bring along some waste bags and pick up after your pal, as well as water to share. Pet-parents are also asked to keep their pooches leashed and on good behavior.

The centrally located, furtastic Animas River Trail is sure to get your pup's tail wagging!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
