Is your doggo using their big brown eyes to beg for a walk? Then grab the leash and make your way over to Big Rivers Regional Trail. This rails to trails pathway runs along an old Minnesota Central Railroad corridor. Your doggo can experience the same route as the old railcars.
As a point to point trail, this walkway connects two
trailheads. You can either start at East Trailhead on Lilydale Road, or at the
West Trailhead on Mendota Heights Road. There are restrooms at both trailheads. Starting from the West Trailhead, the paved
trail follows the Minnesota River in a northeast direction. Your pooch will love
strutting their stuff along this pupular trail. Since it is multi-use and often
used for commuting, chances are you will encounter cyclists, joggers, and other
dog walkers. Help your furry friend yield as appropriate.
Around the half way point, the trail passes the
confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. Furtunately, there are a
few designated lookout points so you and your pal can safely view the impressive
rivers. You can also see Pike Island. There are lots of little critters that
live around the trail. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, turkeys, rabbits, and
even eagles.
If you and your athletic pooch plan to complete the
entire 4.5 miles, don’t forget to arrange for a pick up or have a shuttle
vehicle at the opposite end of where you begin. Big Rivers Regional Trail
connects to the 72 mile Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. So if
your doggo still has energy to burn, you can keep trekking. Be sure to carry some clean up bags and pick
up any doggy debris your pup leaves behind. Have plenty of water on hand for
both you and your pooch. Above all else, have a woofderful time exercising with
your pupster!
