If you want to climb up to the summit of a beautiful mountain with your dog, Bulwark Ridge Trail is perfect for you! This stunning 5.3-mile out-and-back trail takes you up Signal Mountain, and along the way, you’ll pass tons of scenic vistas. Dogs are welcome to join you on this pawesome trail on-leash.
Bulwark Ridge Trail begins at the Dunraven Trailhead off of Dunraven Glen Road. At this trailhead, you’ll find a gravel parking lot and a vault toilet. The first part of Bulwark Ridge Trail is very steep—the trail climbs up about 1,000 feet in one mile. The next portion of the trail takes you through the stunning Comachee Peak Wilderness. This area is filled with lots of native trees, including ponderosa pine and Douglas fir trees. You’ll also pass by beautiful wildflowers, and you’ll go through open fields that provide amazing views of the mountains surrounding the wilderness area. You may also get to see some of the wilderness area’s native wildlife, including moose and elks. As you’re walking through this wilderness area, you’ll gradually climb upward. Â
The last portion of the trail takes you up to the summit of Signal Mountain, which has an elevation of 11,260 feet. From the summit, you’ll get pawsitively amazing views of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. You’ll also get stunning views of the Stormy Peaks, Lookout Mountain, and more! You and your dog will both have a great time relaxing on this summit and enjoying the view. Once you’re all rested up, you can then head back down to the start of the trail!
Bulwark Ridge Trail is a challenging and beautiful trail that takes you past picturesque vistas and up to the top of Summit Mountain. Remember to bring doggy bags with you so you can clean up after your dog while you’re hiking, and have a furrific time trekking on this trail!
Black bears live in the area around Bulwark Ridge Trail—be sure to look for them as you’re hiking. Also, be aware that there’s no water available at the trailhead or on the trail. Be sure to bring plenty of water with you for you and your pup.Â
