Experience the vibrant colors of Red Rock Canyon with a pawsome hike on the Calico Tanks Trail. Your furry friend will absolutely love trekking through the red and white sandstone bluffs. With the blue sky as a backdrop, this trail provides unparalleled scenery. And since it’s not very long, it’s a great option if you have two legged children in tow.
Calico Tanks Trail begins at the Sandstone Quarry
Trailhead. Not too far into the hike, you will pass the old Excelsior Stone Quarry.
Stop to read the infurmation panel so you can learn about the former
quarry industry. As you continue down the wide gravel path, be sure to follow
posted signs since there are a couple junctions for other trails. About a half
mile into the hike, the trail narrows and turns into a dirt path that runs
through a canyon of colorful sandstone. Be
sure to paws and admire the furrific rock formations and small pools of water.
The last section of the trail has a couple staircases
that have been carved into the sandstone. Your pup should be able to handle
them without a pawblem. As you get deeper into the canyon, the rocks change to
a gray hue. Once you make it to the top of the trail will see a decent size
pool of water. Snap a photo with your pal before heading back down the canyon.
A day pass for Red Rock Canyon costs $15.00 per vehicle.
If you live in the area, consider purchasing an annual pass for only $30.00 per
person. Then you and your doggo can come
back and explore the other furrific trails this park has to offer. Remember to
always have plenty of water on hand, this place can get pretty hot. And don’t
forget to carry some clean up bags and pick up after your beloved pet. Above
all else, have a puptastic time hiking with your furry BFF!
