For a great getaway from it all hike with your pup, head out to the Clearwater Creek Greenway Trail near Redding in California. There you'll have the chance to put yours and your fur buddy's stamina to the test on a puptastic twelve-mile hike. Don't worry if you're not up to doing the full distance. This is an out and back trail, so you can turn around whenever you're ready.Â
Pack your knapsack with water and some goodies to munch on along the way, pop a few clean up bags in too. You'll be hiking through old gold mining country, and there are no facilities on the trail, just pawsome wilderness for you and your pup to explore.
You can find the trailhead by driving out of Redding on Highway 73 or Pine Road in the direction of the Win-River Resort and Casino. From where the road changes to Clear Creek Road, it's around ten miles to the trailhead which is clearly signed, and there's a place for parking. From the parking lot, you and your leashed fur buddy will be straight on the trail which is a wide, large-grade gravel pathway. That pathway will lead you through some stunningly beautiful and lightly wooded countryside where the main feature is the fast-running creek. You'll be alongside it all the time, and you and your pup will love the way the water rushes and cascades over the stony creek bed.Â
It's easy to imagine how the pioneers of old felt when they were at the creek panning for gold. You and your fur buddy might not be pioneers or panning for gold, but you'll be treading in the footsteps of those who did. If you're there at the right time of year, you'll be fortunate enough to see Chinook salmon making their way upstream to their spawning grounds. Now that's pawsome!
