Get ready for a hike with some major maritime history! Leash up your pup and take the leisurely stroll down the Derby Wharf trail for a journey back in time in Salem. The short, but popular Derby Wharf trail stretches a half-mile into the Salem Harbor providing spectacular views of boats and ships as they make their way through the sparkling waters and passed the wharf.
To find this fun trail, head to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site across from the Salem Custom House. Once you and your pooch have made your way into the nation’s first historic site, you’ll see the wharf and its stone walls jutting out into the chilly blue waters. The pathway is lined with manicured grass on both sides, making it a pleasant area for a walk with Fido. Be sure to pack the cleanup baggies, just in case the urge to, ahem, you-know-what, hits your furry pal. There are also lots of seagulls and other waterfowl around that will surely get your pup’s tail wagging, too.
This 96-inch wide, gravel trail is dotted with interpretive stations that detail the area’s sea faring and trading history and a life-size replica of the vessel Friendship circa 1797. It’s a majestic sight to behold as you and your dog make your way down the trail with the sea breeze in your face.
At the end of the Derby Wharf trail, you’ll find the trail’s namesake lighthouse. One of only five square-shaped lighthouses in the nation, this navigational landmark has been standing tall at the end of the wharf since 1871. Though not much has changed in appearances with the lighthouse over the years, it has been upgraded to solar-power and has a red light that flashes every six seconds.
With so much interesting history for you and Fido to scope out and beautiful water views, you’ll have a great time on the Derby Wharf trail!
