Description

The El Toro Trail in the El Yunque National Forest of  Puerto Rico is a short, natural-surface pathway to the highest peak of the Luquillo Mountains. This passage will take you through three levels of forest on the way to the summit. By the time you reach the top, you'll be hiking among the clouds. There are stunning views of the island from up here.

This pathway is clear of debris from Hurricane Maria and open for business. You can start at the trailhead on Road 186 in the northwest part of the forest. Most of the way is a gentle climb in the woods. You'll pass through tabonuco forest and sierra palms before arriving in the cloud forest near the peak. This final section features dwarf trees, moss, and shrubs. There are snifftastic wildflowers throughout your trek. Once you conquer the apex, take time to enjoy the scenery, watch the clouds float by, and have a picnic. Dragonflies and butterflies frequent this tranquil area.

National Forest Service rules allow you to bring Spot on a lead or cord. This route is a remote trail, so it's best to travel in a group and let others know about your plans when you come here. Stick to the pathway for your safety. Although the passage is not very lengthy, it can get very humid here, so bring plenty of water. Bring bags to collect and pack out any waste.

In the cloud forest of Puerto Rico, you and your canine companion can go hiking through the El Yunque National Forest on the El Toro Trail. This pawtastic passageway will take you to the mountain's peak where you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Due to the wet conditions that can prevail up here, it would be best to wear long pants and shirt sleeves when you visit.
