It’s easy to see why Fish Creek Falls Trail #1102 is a crowd pleaser. Not only is it conveniently located just minutes from Steamboat Springs, but this trail is a waterfall lover’s dream come true! Plus, with various stopping points along the way, you can tailor the hike to your doggo’s abilities. So grab the leash and get hiking!
Begin your journey at the most pupular part of the trail. Just ¼ mile from the parking lot, you’ll come to the Fish Creek Falls overlook. There’s also a paved half mile trail to the same spot for those with wheelchairs or strollers. Either way, once you arrive, you’ll be gazing up at the magnificent 280-foot waterfall. During the spring, the snow runoff makes this waterfall a force to be reckoned with. Snap a photo of you and your pup before continuing on. Most folks won’t hike past this point, but your furry friend knows there is much more to see!
The next stop on this pawsome trail is the Upper Falls. It’s 2.5 miles past the overlook. You’ll have to work harder to reach this spot, as there’s an elevation gain of 1,600 feet. But the beautiful scenery of aspens and pines will help your pup forget they are out of breath. Once you arrive, paws for a water break and more photos. You’ll want to pull out the bug spray since mosquitoes love this part of the trail!
If you have an athletic dog, continue on towards Long
Lake. It’s another 3.5 miles, but you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous high mountain
scenery and a puptastic alpine lake. Just be sure you bring plenty of water and
snacks for both you and your pup.
The trailhead has vault toilets, a water spigot, and picnic tables. Before heading off, make sure your water bottles are filled to the brim. When you arrive back to the parking lot, get one last look at the stunning waterfall before calling it day. Your pooch will definitely be ready to hop in the car and take a nap!
