Description

The Flat Top-Fallingwater Cascades Trail is a furrific National Recreation Trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This pathway includes a 1.4-mile loop out to the Fallingwater Creek waterfall and an out-and-back climb up Flat Top Mountain. On the half-day trek, you'll be able to enjoy scenic views and see a range of vegetation. From lush valley forest to rocky mountain peaks, you and your furry pal will experience many environments here.

When you take the loop around the cascades, you'll head into a forested gorge with hemlocks and rhododendrons. Hike out to the creek and cross the water above the falls on a wooden footbridge. Then you can follow the steep pathway down to the base of the waterfall. Go back across on the rocks to start your return climb to the trailhead. After you ascend from the valley, you can cross Blue Ridge Parkway and head up Flat Top Mountain. Follow the switchbacks and notice how the terrain becomes rockier as you climb. Up here, you'll see hardwood forest give way to mountain laurel. Take time to admire the beautiful scenery at the summit before returning to your car.

The National Park Service allows you to bring leashed pets with you in this public area. Remember to keep to the trail for your personal safety and that of your pet. Pack water for the trip to stay hydrated. Help to preserve the natural surroundings by removing and packing out any waste.

This pathway offers a pawtastic way for you and Spot to get out and enjoy nature while you exercise together. From a gorge with rocky outcroppings and rushing water to a mountain plateau with panoramic views, you'll have plenty of photo opportunities. Get a good workout as you navigate the steeper inclines and hike up the mountain switchbacks with your canine companion.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.

Cautions & Considerations
Once you get to the Fallingwater cascades, you'll need to hop rocks to cross the creek. If you're visiting during a spring melt or wet season, expect to get a little wet. This area is bear country, so be on alert. Do not try to approach a bear if you see one.
