The trail starts off at the Go John Trailhead, located just past the Cave Creek Regional Park Entrance along East Cave Creek Parkway, on North Tonalite Road. At the trailhead, you'll find plenty of parking and restrooms. From here, you and your furry travel companion can embark on your adventure. Bring along any essentials, such as clean up bags and water.
From the trailhead, you can start the loop in either direction. Many choose to head north, which immediately provides some elevation gain. On your travels, you'll reach a pass with panoramic views of the Tonto National Forest, and old mine shaft, and desert washes. There are some benches along the way, where you can kick back and enjoy the scenery while Fido rests his paws. The last stretch of the hike provides great views of the city below. If you choose to hike the trail in the spring, you'll be rewarded with a variety of blooming wildflowers. You'll find a variety of side trails on the way as well, which will allow you to explore deeper into the backcountry.Â
If you'd like to learn more about the area, you can check out the nature center, or even take a nature walk with a Park Ranger. Horseback rides are available as well. Pups are allowed to join their humans in the outdoor areas, so long as they stay leashed, picked up after, and on good behavior. The Go John Trail will have your pup leaping for joy!Â
