Harrisburg's Riverfront Park is a long, narrow greenway between Front Street and the Susquehanna River on the eastern edge of Downtown Harrisburg. The 4-mile waterfront walking trail gives your pack plenty of room to roam. Leashed dogs are welcome on the riverfront, so take a break from the big-city hustle and bustle with your very best buddies!
In addition to your view of open water, scenic bridges, and boats, your stroll along the Susquehanna includes vibrant flowerbeds, art installations, memorials, and plazas. Best of all are the new friends you'll make. Sure, your human neighbors will be milling around, but so will their delightful doggos! If your pups like other pups, they'll love hobnobbing on the riverfront.
Smooth and flat, this trail is still long enough to wear out your short-legged buddies. The paved surface is wheelchair and stroller accessible, so the whole family can come along for this workout. If your pups really need to burn some energy, though, you're in luck: the riverfront is part of the 20-mile Capital Area Greenbelt. This trail network forms a loop around the city, exploring its business centers, neighborhoods, and suburban woodland. Since the CAG is pawpular with bikers, your fur family will need to share the road.
You'll find plenty of well-placed benches if you need a break along the way, but many of the riverfront regulars prefer to make a day of their visit. There are 11 dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating located within a block or two of the trail. The Federal Taphouse on N 2nd St has a furrific fenced patio to keep Fido and Fifi safely separate from the traffic.
Though there is no dedicated parking lot for the Harrisburg Riverfront Park, plenty of free parking is available just across the pedestrian bridge on City Island. The park is also within easy reach of metered and garage parking within a few blocks.
