If the Las Vegas heat is getting to your pup, then head over to Red Rock Canyon Natural Conservation Area and take a hike on this pawsome trail. There’s a reason it is called Ice Box Canyon. Since the canyon is narrow, there is very little sunlight. The shade combined with the cold mountain stream make this place a refuge from the thermometer busting temperatures this area is known for.
Start your adventure at the Ice Box Canyon Trailhead. From there you and your pup will cross a desert wash. The trail then cuts through vegetated flats. Watch for
native plants like buckhorn cholla, beavertail cactus, penstemon and sage. There
are several spur trails, but stay on the main path so you can reach the cool
canyon. Soon the trail narrows and drops down into another wash at the mouth of
the canyon.
From here things get a little tricky since there are spots you
need to scramble up. If your pooch isn’t up to the task, this is a great spot
to turn around. Be aware that there are snakes in the area, so never put your
hands into nooks or crannies unless you can see that the coast is clear. The trail ends at some clear mountain pools where your doggo can
splash around and cool off their paws. A gorgeous waterfall runs from December
to April. Spend some time exploring the area before making your way back down.
A day pass for Red Rock Canyon costs $15.00 per vehicle.
If you live in the area, consider purchasing an annual pass for only $30.00 per
person. Then you and your doggo can come
back and explore the other furrific trails this park has to offer. Always carry
plenty of water for both you and your four legged explorer. Make no mistake,
your pooch will go mutts over this trail!
