Description

With more than 8 waterfront miles of trail for walking and biking, the Jefferson Linear Trail connects Metairie with Kenner in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. This paved, stroller- and wheelchair-accessible trail in suburban New Orleans is available 24/7 with a beautiful view over Lake Pontchartrain.

Also called the Lakefront Trail due to its position atop the Lake Pontchartrain levy, this pawpular recreation spot was created back in 1976 and redesigned in the mid-90s before taking a beating during Hurricane Katrina. After extensive work to raise the Jefferson Parish levies in recent years, the Linear Trail has seen more change and rejuvenation. The trail features big sky over big water, with a grassy margin between you and Metairie businesses and affluent homes. It feels doggone peaceful for an urban trail.

The eastern trailhead is adjacent to Bucktown Marina's plentiful parking. From there, it's a little more than a mile to Bonnabel Park, an alternate jumping-on point with parking. If you're already in need of a break but your energetic pooches aren't ready to slow down, you can stop at the Bonnabel Dog Park, a free, fenced off-leash play area.

Once your buddies are back on-leash, continue your journey towards Kenner on the Jefferson Linear Trail. The trail hugs the waterfront and winds past densely populated suburban neighborhoods. The next opportunity for a trailside pit stop is nearly 7 miles away at Laketown Park, although you'll have the chance to veer off onto city sidewalks sooner at the N Causeway Boulevard if you need provisions or a break from the trail life. Laketown Park has a concession stand open Tuesday through Sunday until 7:00, plus shady pavilions and running water.

If you still have stamina, there's more trail to sniff out once the whole pack is rehydrated. The trail follows the lake for another mile to the edge of town before veering south along the levy into Kenner. If you find you don't have the energy to make the return trip (and most pups wouldn't attempt a Jefferson Linear Trail roundtrip all in one day), just take advantage of your suburban location and summon a dog-friendly lift back to your car using your preferred transportation app.

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.

Cautions & Considerations
There are few serious dangers along the Jefferson Linear Trail aside from hot Louisiana sunshine and a serious lack of shade. You can fill up water bottles at municipal parks along the way, but make sure you're prepared for the Louisiana heat. Mosquito repellent will also be important, given the waterfront setting. The trail is not located in a high-crime area, but always exercise normal caution when walking, especially at night. We know your pups will be keeping an eye out for shenanigans, too!
