Description

When in Honolulu, you may be tempted to just relax on the beach and revel in the laid back island vibe. But your active pooch would totally rather take hike through the hills of Oahu. So grab the leash and head over to Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail. You can always get some beach time in later.

The Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trailhead is located at the end of Kala’au Place. After following a paved path for a short bit, be sure to catch the dirt trail that veers off to the right. The steep climb begins straight out of the gate as you and your pooch are treated to a long stretch of switchbacks. Most of the trail runs through thick groves of trees, so while your doggo can’t escape the humidity, they’ll at least have some shade.

As you follow the trail up the valley, be sure to stop every now and again to take in the views. There are several points where the valley opens up and you can catch a glimpse the ocean. Everywhere you look you’ll see lush vegetation. Your furry friend will be enthralled with the massive trees, tangled roots, layers of pine needles, and natural tree arches.

The last stretch of the trail includes a couple sets of steep stairs. Let your pup take their time and, as always, stop for water breaks. Once you make it to the top, give your doggo a pat on the head then soak in the unbelievable view. It may be breezy on the ridge, but the wind in their fur will cool your pal right off.

Since the trail is steep, it often takes longer than expected. Give yourself plenty of time and wear sturdy shoes. Bring plenty of water and trail snacks for you and your pup. Don’t forget to clean up after your pooch. Even though this hike will tucker them out, your pooch will absolutely love it!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
