Lake Como is a pristine body of water nestled in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley. It’s a pupular spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. More importantly, it’s got a puptastic trail that will make your furry friend bark for joy! Grab the leash and head over to the Lake Como Loop Trail for a pawsome adventure.
This relatively flat trail begins at the north end of the
lake and follows the shore all the way around, creating a furrific loop. The
first quarter of a mile is paved and features interpretive signs. Stop for a
bit of light reading and learn all about the vegetation and how fire has
impacted the area. Since the north shore is pedestrian use only, your pup won’t
have to worry about mountain bikers zooming past. But as you make your way to
the southern section of the trail, keep an eye out for cyclists and
equestrians. Â
Cross the bridge over Rock Creek to continue the hike. Your pal will love wandering through the conifer forest and climbing on the large rocks that line the trail. Enjoy gorgeous views of the Como Peaks and the bright blue Montana sky. About midway through the loop, you’ll pass a lovely waterfall. Let your doggo dip their paws in for a quick cool down. They can also go for a swim in the lake. Unfortunately, they are not allowed on designated beaches, but there are other spots along the trail where they can access the water.
The trailhead features restrooms, water, and parking. Don’t forget to fill up your water bottles before hitting the trail. Picnic tables and grills are also available. After your hike, stick around for a barbecue or picnic. You can’t beat the gorgeous scenery, and your canine buddy wouldn’t mind hanging out in the mountains a bit longer.Â
