Description

A must stop on your hiking to-do list is the Lehigh Canal Heritage Trail. Located in Weissport, this Pennsylvania hiking trail sits in the central-eastern portion of the state, and is open to all fun-loving pawtastic pups and their owners!

Running for 6 miles, this trail has been converted from a railroad line from the Central Railroad system. It sits in the historic borough of Weissport, built in the mid-1700’s by Benjamin Franklin to protect its residents from Indian attacks and was called Fort Allen at the time. This town soon after transformed into a boat building location because of its proximity to the Lehigh Canal, and now this trail makes it accessible for history buffs and hikers alike!

Open to walkers, hikers, equestrians, runners, bicyclists and skaters, this scenic multi-use trail offers something for everyone. There are some paved sections, but mostly it is hard-packed dirt and gravel. You can even do some camping along this rural trail for a great overnighter with your pup in tow! Fishermen will love throwing in their line in choice spots along the canal. The trail is well-maintained in winter, and offers cross-country skiers a place to stretch their legs too! Be sure to keep pup on leash throughout this multi-use trail for everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

There is no reason why you should miss this opportunity to challenge yourself. Although designated as ‘easy,’ you can use this trail to build up endurance, or for those less-than-active pups, and is suitable for all fitness levels. Your elderly or couch-potato pup will enjoy its level terrain and those more active pups can run on an extended leash along the grassy areas on either side of the path for more exercise!

The Lehigh Canal Heritage Trail is waiting for you and your furry friend to visit!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
