If you are looking for a pawtastic hike in the Los Angeles area, but only have a couple hours, pack up your furry friend and head to the Mount Mooney Trail. It is not far from Mt. Wilson, California, where you will pick up the trailhead.
The route is out and back and meanders through the area for 3.5 miles. This trail is perfect for all pup-abilities as it is rated as a Class 1 trail which is considered ‘easy.’ However, you should take note that the beginning section of the trail has a 450’ elevation difference which, taken slowly, can still be easily completed by all fitness-level pups!
You will begin your journey from the Charlton Flats Picnic Area and make your way to the summit. This trail is a dirt path which is quite wide, and roomy enough for many hikers. Your pup will love the additional room, but it is required that they remain on leash. There are pine trees on either side of the path which offer plenty of shade on those hotter days.
The summit will provide spectacular views for all and is a great place to snap a portrait of Fido to remember your hike together. You will see the San Gabriel Mountain Range towards the east and the Charlton Flats to the west. Take a well-deserved rest before you head back down. This is also a great place to pull out the snacks and bottled water.Â
Hikers will not have any fees to park at the trailhead, but a vehicle requires a National Forest Adventure Pass. There are no restrooms, so be sure to plan accordingly. Taking the Mount Mooney hike with your pup in the Los Angeles area will give you lots of memories to cherish and a fun time to boot!
