The North Mountain Trail is a beautiful out-and-back trail that’s perfect to trek with dogs! This trail is 1.6 miles long, and it welcomes pups on-leash. The trail begins at the Maricopa Trailhead in North Mountain Park. Here, you can park your car and use the restroom before heading out on your wagtastic adventure. You can also fill up your water bottle at the park’s drinking fountain.
Once you’re ready, you can head on to the trail itself. The North Mountain Trail is steep, and it has an elevation gain of 614 feet. Some portions of the trail have hard asphalt and others are made of dirt. Be sure to look out for loose rocks when you’re walking on the dirt portions of the trail.
When you reach the highest part of the trail, you’ll get amazing views of Downtown and North Phoenix. You’ll also get pawesome views of the Phoenix Mountains and the desert around Phoenix. The trail ends at the summit of North Mountain. Here, there’s a bench where you can relax and enjoy the views before you head back down to the start of the trail.
Be aware that dogs aren’t allowed on the trail when it’s 100 degrees or hotter outside. Because of this, it’s important to check the temperature before you leave for your hike. There’s very little shade on the trail, and so it’s a good idea to give your dog extra water to keep them hydrated while they’re walking. Also, make sure to watch out for rattlesnakes as you’re trekking down the trail.
