Pennsylvania is a pawtastic state
to find welcoming and amazing hiking adventures you and your pup can set out
on. From the city of Pittsburg to the
city of Harrisburg,Â
the Pittsburg to Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway is your ticket to endless hiking opportunities.
This greenway is a 320-mile route which follows an old canal system. Formerly a water canal for shipping goods and people across the state, the railroad system moved in and installed rail lines, now converted to hiking and water trails. The hiking trail within this system offers you and your pup 49.35-miles of land to traverse, and is divided up into six different sections along the old rail line. While you can't walk this greenway directly from Pittsburg to Harrisburg, you can pick up the trailhead at multiple locations, such as at Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Pittsburgh, and the 6-10 Trail near Duncansville. Check a route map for specific details depending on which town you will access it from. Start in one city and move to others on various days. You will never run out of hiking options here!
Your pup-tastic walk will take you through different counties, open spaces, woods, forests, mountains and small towns before you are finished your journey. This out-and-back trail offers something for everyone and every pup! It is an average of 8’ wide over a dirt and natural crushed stone surface. Along the way, you will find designated birding areas selected by the Audubon Society, parks and historical remnants of days gone by.Â
Since most of the trail is nearly level, with some shorter distances having a slight grade, it is suitable for most pup-abilities. To keep this trail pup-friendly, it is required for you to clean up after Fido. Pack mutt mitts, a leash, plenty of water and binoculars for this adventure together!Â
