Description

Make no bones about it -- Redwood Regional Park is a true nature-loving pup’s paradise. Not only does this Oakland, CA gem boast a trail for each and every ability, doggos are allowed to sniff and explore off-leash on most routes in the park. The only treks that aren’t open to free-roaming fur-balls are the Stream Trail and Serpentine Prairie Trail, but these scenic stretches are still worth a leashed wander! You’ll find plenty of parking on Skyline, just past the Chabot Space Center, but there is a small park fee -- $5 for your car and $2 for your dog. It’s best to get there early on the weekends, as spaces fill up quickly. There are also several camping areas in the park, but you'll need to make a reservation before you and your pup pitch your tent!

The original trees in Redwood Regional Park have long since been logged, but the second generation growth is still all kinds of majestic, particularly when fog blows in over the bay. Not only that, but in the spring, the forest is carpeted with a blanket of beautiful wildflowers. Most routes also pass some evergreens and chapparal, and the Stream Trail runs along a waterway packed with trout. Fitter furry friends in search of a challenge might want to try their luck on the six-mile French Trail Loop, which features inclines that range from the steep to the truly punishing. If you’re out of breath just thinking about it, don’t worry -- there are plenty of routes more suitable for the less athletic among us! West Ridge and Tres Sendas Trails are short, sweet, and mostly flat, and feature some stunning creambushes.

As you might have guessed, accessibility in Redwood Regional Park varies from trail to trail. Most surfaces aren’t paved, though, so watch your step! Almost all of the trails can get quite muddy after it rains. In terms of facilities, there are restrooms at almost all trailheads, and you’ll find some picnic areas dotted throughout the park. If you find yourself looking for a walk in the Oakland area, you’d be barking mad not to check out Redwood Regional Park!

Wag! does not allow or encourage Pet Care Providers to bring dogs to parks.
