The Sand Creek Trail is the pawfect spot for a lazy afternoon stroll with your furry BFF. The trail is nestled on the beautiful campus of Bethel College and wanders near Sand Creek. It is not only a great place for walking your dog, it has a pawsome past as well. Years ago, after artifacts were unearthed by two young boys the area was discovered to be an old Native American campsite. That’s pretty pawsome!
The main trailhead is located inside Memorial Grove. This peaceful wooded area was created for reflection, and often hosts college and community events. Meander around and let your pal sniff the flowers and check out the gazebo before setting off on the actual trail. Let your pup be the guide as you follow the wood chip path as it makes a loop around the property. There are more than 40 varieties of trees growing in the forest, so as you can imagine this is a prime bird watching location. Your pup’s ears will perk up as they hear the sounds of Cooper hawks, red-bellied woodpeckers, American robins, and orioles. Also keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, beaver, and armadillo.  Paws for a break on one of the trail’s benches and take a minute to soak in the beautiful surroundings.
If your doggo needs a longer walk, hop on the Trail of Two Cities. This paved pathway connects Memorial Grove with Centennial Park and gives your pal a little more room to strut their stuff. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and clean up bags to pick up after your pooch. Since it is quite short, this is also an ideal trail if you have two legged children in tow. Regardless of who is in your hiking group, your canine pal will go mutts for Sand Creek Trail!
