Description

Nestled in the North Cascades of the Mount Baker area near Concrete, Washington is a dog-friendly and easy hike known as the Shadow of the Sentinels Trail. Located in Mount Baker Recreation Area, this half-mile trail is paved with asphalt and has boardwalks in other sections. That means this is a wheelchair accessible trail, and it's also convenient for pushing a stroller if you bring your little ones on the walk. It only takes about a half an hour to complete this hike, but there are interpretive signs along the way. Plan to spend a bit more time there so you can take in all of the information and scenery.

This hike is known for its trees. During your walk, you'll be surrounded by 500-year old trees, some so tall you won't be able to see the tops. Keep an eye out for a sign pointing to a Douglas fir tree that's seven feet in diameter. There's a variety of other plant species you'll notice on your journey, including moss and wildflowers, and you'll spot several interesting birds, too. Keep an eye out for signs along the way, as the information they provide will help you make the most of your visit.

There's an accessible toilet at the trailhead, and the first part of your walk begins on a boardwalk. Before long, the boardwalk turns into a paved trail.

An annual pass for the park will cost you $30, but you can also purchase a daily permit for $5 if you only plan on visiting the Mount Baker National Forest one time. Bring drinking water for you and your pet, as well as a supply of doggie bags for your walk. Always clean up after your pet along the way to keep the trail enjoyable for everyone, and keep Skip on a leash.

When it's time for a smooth and accessible hike you can complete with your dog in under an hour, be sure to visit the Shadow of the Sentinels Trail in Washington!
