If your pooch is feeling restless, then it’s time for a walk down the Trail of Restless Waters. Tucked away on the rugged Oregon Coast, this short trail lets your pup experience the wild beauty of Cape Perpetua. Although it isn’t very long, this trail should not be missed.
The name Trail of Restless Waters perfectly describes the Pacific Ocean along this hike. Enjoy puptacular views of the sea pounding against the rocky coast. Access the trail just north of the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center or from the Devil’s Churn Day Use Area. Let your canine buddy be the guide as you follow the path along the coastline through lush vegetation and Sitka spruce.
Eventually you’ll come to Devil’s Churn, a chasm in the basalt cliffs. Waves come crashing into this fissure and create a frothy pool of churning salt water. Your pup will agree; it’s quite breathtaking! Spend time at the overlook watching the water come in. Since each wave hits differently, you’ll get quite a show. If your pup is in the mood for a walk on the beach, take the short spur trail down to Cape Cove Beach. Your doggo can feel the sand beneath their paws as they stroll along this quiet stretch of surf.
Although this trail is pupular in the summer, don’t discount
its beauty in the off season. During the winter, coastal storms create dramatic
waves and Devil’s Churn is even more active. Restrooms and water are available
at both the Visitors Center and Devil’s Churn Day Use Area. Parking costs $5.00
for a single day. Recreation Passes are also accepted. These annual passes cost
$80.00, but are worth it if you live in the area or are traveling through the
Northwest. After all, your four legged friend will want to return to this trail
again and again!
