Description

For a lovely stroll across Lake Butte des Morts, hit the Tribal Heritage Crossing of the Wiouwash Trail with your doggo! This 2-mile, paved causeway path runs next to Interstate 41, which locals refer to as the Lake Butte des Morts Bridge. Since it is separated from traffic lanes by a permanent wall, walkers, runners, bikers, in-line skaters, and furry pedestrians can travel between the north and south sides of Oshkosh without worrying about their safety.

The Tribal Heritage Crossing is a fun and unique trail that you can enjoy with your pup. Aside from woofderful views of the water, it features educational kiosks that discuss the history of Lake Butte des Morts and celebrate the 11 Native American tribes of Wisconsin. Benches accompany the kiosks, so take your time in reading each one and learning more about the history of the area. As you're taking in the scenery, keep an eye out for wildlife such as white pelicans, herons, cormorants, and muskrats.

At the trail's midpoint, you'll find a portable toilet that is available seasonally. There's also a path that leads down to an area under the bridge, where you and Fido can sit and watch the boats going up and down the water. At the north end of the bridge, you and your four-legged pal may continue on to the 22-mile Wiouwash State Recreation Trail if you're up for a longer trek.

Be sure to always keep your pooch on an 8-foot leash, clean up after them, and bring lots of water. The trail is accessible from either end, with parking available along Marine and Lake Butte des Morts Drives on the north side, and along Rath Lane on the south side. More than a causeway bridge path, the Tribal Heritage Crossing Trail is a furrific spot for experiencing the area's natural beauty and rich history with your pupper!
